Given that the UK imports approximately 65% of its jet fuel—often sourced from the Middle East—the government is currently collaborating with the nation’s four refineries to maximize output and is exploring the possibility of boosting imports from the United States.
Although airlines have reported no immediate fuel supply issues, experts caution that delivery disruptions linked to escalating tensions in Iran could lead to shortages in the coming weeks. The International Energy Agency has indicated that without alternative fuel sources, Europe could face significant fuel deficiencies by June.
Protecting Valuable Airport Slots
Airlines are typically hesitant to cancel flights in advance due to the risk of losing valuable take-off and landing slots at busy airports, such as London’s Heathrow and Gatwick. These slots, which can be worth millions of pounds, are tightly regulated and must be utilized at least 80% of the time to retain them. The existing regulations, governed by the Airports Slot Allocation Regulations 2025, have often resulted in airlines flying partially filled planes just to keep their slots.

In late April, the government clarified guidelines indicating that airlines could temporarily return unused slots without penalty in case of fuel shortages. This new legislation, expected to be announced soon, will empower carriers to cancel flights at least two weeks in advance, enabling them to anticipate challenges rather than react last minute. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized that these changes aim to foster a smoother travel experience for families this summer.
Industry Response and Future Considerations
Airlines UK, which represents domestic carriers, praised the government's forward-thinking approach. Chief Executive Tim Alderslade noted that these adjustments would help airlines operate more efficiently while maintaining important connections for passengers and freight. Furthermore, the government is also evaluating the possibility of allowing the use of alternative fuel specifications, such as the US model Jet A, to enhance flexibility in fuel sourcing.
