Train Passengers Struggle with Poor Mobile Signal Despite Promised Upgrades

Emma Richardson - Jun 03, 2026 - 6

In a revealing new study, Ofcom has reported that mobile phone connectivity on trains throughout Britain leaves much to be desired. Passengers attempting to scroll social media or stream videos often find themselves frustrated by poor signals.

Network Performance Falls Short

The research showed that major mobile networks are failing to deliver a reliable signal on train journeys. Vodafone's service met Ofcom's standard for 'good performance' a mere 17% of the time. Even the best performer, EE, only hit this benchmark 42% of the time.

Other providers didn’t fare much better: Three reached the standard on 21% of routes, while O2 managed just 20%.

Structural Challenges Identified

Mobile UK, the body representing major mobile providers, attributed these issues to 'unique structural and capacity challenges' affecting signal strength near train tracks. They emphasized the need for local authorities and mobile networks to collaborate better, with many applications for infrastructure upgrades being turned down over recent years.

Call for Government Action

Mobile UK has urged the government to initiate planning reforms and invest in the necessary infrastructure. They argue that public funding may be essential to address the connectivity black spots on the rail network, stating, 'commercial rollout alone cannot bridge the gap.'

Insights from Ofcom's Findings

The Ofcom report set minimum thresholds for what constitutes a 'good signal': a download speed of five megabits per second and an upload speed of 1.5 megabits per second. Unfortunately, these metrics were not met consistently. In fact, train Wi-Fi reported a disappointing performance rate of just 1% during testing.

Exciting Developments Ahead

The Department for Transport plans to enhance train Wi-Fi connectivity by utilizing low-earth satellites, moving beyond traditional 4G and 5G networks, with £57 million earmarked for the project. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to announce details of this game-changing initiative soon.

The Future of Mobile Signal on Trains

As mobile users continue to experience difficulties on their journeys, the pressure mounts on both phone network providers and government bodies to bring about significant changes. Better connectivity could transform the passenger experience on Britain’s trains into one that meets modern digital demands.

Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving situation as plans unfold.
