Pornhub Lifts Access Restrictions for Some UK iPhone Users Following Age Verification Updates

Emma Richardson - May 05, 2026 - 17

As of now, UK iPhone users who have verified their age through the latest version of Apple's iOS no longer face restrictions when trying to access Pornhub. Previously, back in February, the site had limited access significantly, only allowing users who had previously registered and proven their age to view adult content.

The changes stem from the Online Safety Act (OSA), which required age verification mechanisms for adult sites. Pornhub's parent company, Aylo, claimed that the OSA's age verification rules lacked uniformity across the industry, prompting their decision to step back from participating in what they described as a flawed system.

The Role of Apple’s Age Checks

With Apple's latest update (iOS 26.4), the company has introduced a pioneering device-based age verification solution specifically for its UK users. This advancement marks a significant move towards creating a safer online environment for children. According to Alex Kekesi, Aylo's head of community and brand, this initiative reflects a substantial step in protecting minors globally. Kekesi stated, "As a result, today Aylo welcomes eligible age-confirmed UK iOS users back to Pornhub."

Impact of the Online Safety Act

Pornhub’s compliance with the OSA has resulted in a dramatic decline in traffic, with user engagement plummeting by over 75% since the act's stringent age checks took effect. While some speculate that VPNs might have played a role in circumventing these restrictions, Aylo's attempts to engage with the UK regulator, Ofcom, on how to meet the OSA requirements continue.

Ofcom’s Oversight and Expectations

An Ofcom spokesperson iterated that while they monitor the situation closely, it is ultimately the responsibility of adult sites to implement robust age-checking measures that demonstrate effectiveness. They emphasized the need for sites like Pornhub to provide substantial evidence of their compliance.

The User Experience and Controversy

Apple's implementation of age checks prompted discussions about user accessibility, as some individuals faced challenges proving their age without a credit card or ID. To address these issues, Apple has since expanded the list of acceptable age verification documents to include passports. However, this approach has drawn criticism from groups like Big Brother Watch, which argue that such restrictions impinge on the digital freedoms of UK citizens.

Looking Ahead

With Pornhub's partial restoration of access, observers are left wondering whether this will influence other adult sites to adjust their policies. As the UK continues to navigate the complexities of online safety and freedom, the discussion around age verification measures remains increasingly relevant.
