Ebola Crisis in DR Congo: WHO Warns of Deadly Intersection with Ongoing Conflict

Daniel Carter - May 27, 2026 - 14

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is grappling with a significant Ebola outbreak that has seen a devastating intersection with ongoing armed conflict. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), has raised alarms about this 'catastrophic collision' hampering containment efforts in the eastern region, particularly in Ituri province.

Conflict Hampering Ebola Response

According to Dr. Tedros, the violence in DRC is obstructing vital healthcare initiatives. He emphasized that, "We cannot build community trust or isolate the sick while bombs are falling." His comments come ahead of his planned visit to DRC on Wednesday, intended to bolster efforts in combating the deadly virus. Since the outbreak was declared, there have been around 220 suspected deaths, casting a shadow over the region's healthcare resources.

Travel challenges due to poor road infrastructure, compounded by conflict-related displacement, have further strained the already fragile health system. International aid cutbacks have only worsened the situation, diminishing local capacity to respond effectively.

The Situation in Ituri Province

Ituri province is at the epicenter of the Ebola crisis and has been under military rule since 2021, following a strategic move to combat multiple armed groups. Dr. Tedros highlighted that halting the virus's transmission hinges on facilitating humanitarian access. He warned that ongoing clashes are displacing communities, pushing individuals with potential exposure into overcrowded camps and jeopardizing containment strategies.

“Frontline workers are risking everything,” he stated, “while attacks on health facilities complicate case tracking and contact identification.” In light of this, he urged all parties involved to agree to an immediate ceasefire, allowing medical teams to operate safely.

International Response and Travel Restrictions

The looming threat of Ebola has prompted several countries to implement strict travel restrictions. Canada has enacted a temporary 90-day entry ban for travelers from DRC, neighboring Uganda, and South Sudan, while the Bahamas has put in place quarantine measures for foreign nationals from these locations. The United States has also restricted entry for non-citizens who have traveled to these regions.

Current projections from Congolese health authorities suggest that around 1,000 individuals are exhibiting symptoms associated with Ebola. DRC's health response is plagued by the struggle to confirm an alarming number of fatalities, with only 17 deaths authentically verified through lab testing to date.

Challenges Ahead

Medical professionals face a pressing challenge in tracking approximately 3,600 individuals identified as contacts of confirmed cases, as the health system grapples with significant testing shortcomings. Ewald Stals, director of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in DRC, stated that though efforts are underway to supply medical resources to tackle the crisis, insecurity and transportation barriers in Ituri province continue to hinder progress.

“We still do not have a full picture of what is happening. Insufficient testing means we are effectively running behind the virus,” he warned, emphasizing the need for comprehensive diagnostics and treatment protocols. Experimental treatments, including a U.S.-developed antibody, may soon be implemented.

Future Actions

In response to the escalating situation, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced its intention to expand on-site operations, deploying additional experts via the EU Health Task Force to assist in the ongoing crisis.

The world watches as the DRC battles this dual threat of disease and conflict, hoping for a timely intervention to preserve lives and restore stability in the region.
