Conflict Hampering Ebola Response
According to Dr. Tedros, the violence in DRC is obstructing vital healthcare initiatives. He emphasized that, "We cannot build community trust or isolate the sick while bombs are falling." His comments come ahead of his planned visit to DRC on Wednesday, intended to bolster efforts in combating the deadly virus. The looming threat of Ebola has prompted several countries to implement strict travel restrictions. Canada has enacted a temporary 90-day entry ban for travelers from DRC, neighboring Uganda, and South Sudan, while the Bahamas has put in place quarantine measures for foreign nationals from these locations. The United States has also restricted entry for non-citizens who have traveled to these regions.
Current projections from Congolese health authorities suggest that around 1,000 individuals are exhibiting symptoms associated with Ebola. “We still do not have a full picture of what is happening. Experimental treatments, including a U.S.-developed antibody, may soon be implemented.
