Calls for FTC Investigation into Roblox Over Child Safety and Financial Policies

In a growing wave of concern, several advocacy organizations are urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate Roblox, the widely popular gaming platform, for alleged violations related to child safety and financial practices. Campaigners claim that children, some as young as five, are at risk of being targeted by strangers and may feel pressured into spending large sums of money while navigating the online environment.

Allegations of Deceptive Practices

The complaint from groups including Fairplay and the National Centre on Sexual Exploitation highlights what they call “unfair and deceptive” practices within Roblox’s in-game economy. They urge regulators to scrutinize the platform's chat features and mechanisms that potentially maximize user engagement, which they believe may contribute to financial exploitation of young users.

Roblox's Response

In response to these allegations, a Roblox spokesperson defended the platform, stating it was “built for fun and connection, not short-term engagement.” They asserted that Roblox has “clear policies” in place against both actual and simulated gambling, along with regulations governing the purchase of random paid items. Notably, the company reported that only 1.4% of its 132 million daily active users made any purchases in the first quarter of 2026.

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance safety, Roblox has introduced measures to prevent children from interacting with adults and implemented age-estimating technologies to assign age-appropriate accounts. Nonetheless, concerns persist among parents and advocates about the financial implications of in-game purchases, especially as children engage with the virtual currency known as Robux.

Parental Concerns on Spending

One particularly alarming example included in the groups’ complaint details a situation involving a parent whose 10-year-old daughter reportedly spent over $7,000 (£5,200) in merely two months, despite attempts to curb her spending. Advocates argue that the complexities surrounding in-game purchases can make it nearly impossible for children and their guardians to track actual real-world costs.

Questionable Game Design Features

The complaint also draws attention to “engagement-maximizing” design features that may keep children hooked on the platform, such as systems that encourage daily rewards and social comparisons based on virtual possessions. These design elements could create gambling-like mechanics that children may not fully comprehend, significantly exploiting their developmental vulnerabilities, especially concerning impulse control and peer influence.

Calls for Greater Awareness and Regulation

Ashwin Verghese, communications director at Fairplay, remarked, “Parents are doing everything they can to protect their children on Roblox, but it’s not a fair fight. The platform is designed to take advantage of kids’ developmental needs and prey on their vulnerabilities.” Verghese insists that parents deserve reassurance about their children’s safety on the platform and stresses the importance of the FTC’s investigation to ensure protective measures are enforced.

Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall, echoed the sentiment, advising that while Roblox is introducing age-based protections, young gamers can easily bypass such hurdles. He emphasized the necessity for improved user and parental awareness surrounding the impacts of social features in games, alongside the need for comprehensive legislative measures to address potentially addictive mechanics.

Concerns Over Communication Features

Another significant area of concern outlined in the complaint pertains to Roblox's communication capabilities. The groups argue that the text and voice chat features expose children to inappropriate content and interactions with adults. Researchers have reported instances of encountering sexual references and offensive language shortly after logging into certain games using under-13 accounts.

Roblox has reportedly generated approximately $4.9 billion (£3.7 billion) in revenue in 2025, marking a 36% increase from the previous year. The FTC has yet to decide whether it will open a formal investigation, but the scrutiny on gaming and social media platforms regarding their safety practices for younger users is intensifying.

As regulators continue to assess the safety of digital environments, the outcome of this investigation could have substantial implications for how platforms like Roblox operate in the future.
