Surge in STIs: Gonorrhoea and Syphilis Reach Alarming New Heights in Europe

Olivia Bennett - May 21, 2026 - 39

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are on the rise in Europe, with gonorrhoea and syphilis experiencing unprecedented levels, as highlighted by the latest findings from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). In a concerning trend, these infections have reached their highest numbers in over a decade, indicating a pressing public health challenge.

Staggering Statistics

In 2024, gonorrhoea cases surged to a staggering 106,331, marking a shocking 303% increase since 2015. Similarly, syphilis cases more than doubled, climbing to 45,557 during the same period. The ECDC attributes this rise partly to "widening gaps in testing and prevention," underscoring the urgent need for improved public health measures.

Call to Action from Health Officials

Bruno Ciancio, who heads the ECDC's Directly Transmitted and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases unit, emphasized the serious consequences of these infections, stating, "These infections can cause severe complications, such as chronic pain and infertility, and, in the case of syphilis, lead to heart or nervous system issues." Additionally, reports indicate that congenital syphilis cases—transferred from mother to child—have nearly doubled from 2023 to 2024, posing long-term health risks to newborns.

Important Prevention Strategies

Ciancio urged individuals to take steps to protect their sexual health: "Use condoms with new or multiple partners, and get tested if you exhibit symptoms." These straightforward actions can significantly curb the spread of STIs.

National Insights: Spain Leads the Surge

Spain has reported the highest number of gonorrhoea and syphilis cases among European nations in 2024, with 37,169 and 11,556 confirmed cases, respectively. The statistics reveal that men who have sex with men are particularly affected, showing substantial long-term increases in both infections. However, heterosexual women of reproductive age are also seeing rising syphilis rates.

UK’s Response and Ongoing Challenges

Since the UK withdrew from EU data-sharing agreements post-Brexit, it has published its own health statistics. According to the UK Health Security Agency’s report for December, England recorded 71,802 cases of gonorrhoea and 9,535 cases of syphilis in 2024. Furthermore, diagnoses of chlamydia reached 168,889, showing a slight decline of 6% from 2015.

Signs and Symptoms of STIs

  • Gonorrhoea: Symptoms can include pain during urination, unusual discharge, and inflammation of the genitals. However, some individuals may experience no symptoms at all.
  • Syphilis: Early symptoms can be subtle, such as sores around the genitals or mouth, a rash on the hands, hair loss, and flu-like symptoms, often appearing intermittently.

Both gonorrhoea and syphilis can lead to serious health issues if left untreated; therefore, prompt testing and treatment are critical.

Conclusion: A Call for Greater Awareness

As the rates of gonorrhoea and syphilis continue to climb, it is vital for individuals and health authorities to prioritize sexual health education, testing, and prevention strategies to combat these rising STI rates across Europe.
