Sui Blockchain Overcomes Recent Outages with Significant Upgrade

James Walker - Jun 01, 2026 - 10

The Sui Foundation has successfully rolled out a significant network upgrade to rectify issues that led to three separate outages, totaling over 15 hours of downtime last week. This update comes as a crucial development for the Sui blockchain, aimed at enhancing stability and performance.

Details of the Outages

The first two outages resulted from bugs that were introduced with the blockchain's 1.72 software update. The third interruption occurred due to an interim fix that intended to stabilize the network but inadvertently created further issues.

On Thursday, the Sui Network faced a significant outage lasting nearly six hours. This was followed by two additional outages on Friday, with durations of 8 hours and 25 minutes and 43 minutes, according to Sui's uptime monitoring dashboard. Fortunately, by Monday, the Foundation reported that systems were fully operational.

What's Changed?

In a blog post, the Sui Foundation detailed the steps taken to address the bugs, stating that the upgrade included:

  • Improved failure containment mechanisms
  • Enhanced end-of-epoch resilience
  • Further investment in artificial intelligence to bolster diagnostics and analyze validator logs

“Validators have comprehensively addressed the issues stemming from the gas-charging bug and the randomness-state bug,” the Foundation confirmed, assuring users that no funds were jeopardized during the outages, and all transactions were preserved.

Past Challenges and Forward Movement

This is not the first time Sui has grappled with outages. A similar incident occurred in January 2026, resulting in extended downtime, and another hiccup in November 2024 caused significant disruptions as validators encountered system crashes. Currently, Sui is ranked as the 13th-largest blockchain by total value locked (TVL), boasting $519 million and supporting 137 distinct protocols, as reported by DefiLlama.

The Road Ahead

Looking ahead, the Sui Foundation is optimistic about the network's stability post-update. The recent outages triggered a decline in the Sui (SUI) token value, which dropped approximately 11% from about 99 cents prior to the disruptions to around 88 cents as of Monday. Just last month, the token had surged to $1.41, reflecting positive developments, including strategic staking by a Nasdaq-listed company.

Sui initially launched its mainnet in May 2023 with the goal of providing scalable solutions capable of processing financial transactions efficiently for mainstream markets.
