A heartwarming story emerges from the Harari Regional State of Ethiopia, where 35-year-old Bedriya Adem has welcomed a remarkable set of quintuplets following a 12-year journey filled with longing and prayer. Bedriya and her husband are reportedly "overjoyed" by the arrival of five healthy babies—a blend of four boys and one girl—at the Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital.
"I cannot express my happiness in words," Bedriya shared with the BBC, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster she endured while waiting for this moment. After years of despair, her fervent prayers were finally answered, bringing forth what she joyfully describes as her "five blessings."
A Rare and Joyful Birth
Dr. Mohammed Nur Abdulahi, the hospital's medical director, noted that both mother and children are currently under medical care. The quintuplets, weighing between 1.3 and 1.4 kilograms (approximately 3 pounds), are in stable condition. He reassured that newborns over one kilogram have a favorable chance for survival and healthy growth.
Remarkably, Bedriya conceived naturally, without the assistance of in vitro fertilization (IVF), which is not offered at the hospital. According to statistics, the likelihood of conceiving quintuplets naturally stands at approximately one in 55 million.
From Heartache to Parenthood
During her pregnancy, Bedriya received diligent medical care, and initially expected to give birth to four babies, only to discover during delivery that there was a fifth. "I prayed for just one child, and Allah gave me five," she recounted, expressing profound gratitude amid the long wait.
The first-time mother shared how her husband had a child from a previous marriage, which added to her personal struggles. "He told me having [the other child] was enough, but inside I was suffering—spiritually and emotionally—as the community questioned my ability to give birth," Bedriya explained.
Reflecting on her distressing journey, she stated, "What I endured feels like a distant dream. I spent 12 years in pain, hiding, and praying constantly for children—finally, Allah heard me." Despite her overwhelming joy, she voiced concerns about supporting her newly enlarged family, saying, "I believe Allah will provide, with help from my community and the government."

Bedriya has fondly named her quintuplets Naif, Ammar, Munzir, Nazira, and Ansar, embracing the joy they bring to her life.
